Vasiliki Karpouzi Vasiliki Karpouzi
BSc (Aristotle University)
MSc (University of British Columbia)

Vasiliki was born in Komotini, Greece and received her Bachelor Degree from the School of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2001. While she was doing her undergraduate studies, she participated in four scientific projects, two of them funded by the European Union. Research was focused mainly on comparative trammel net selectivity studies in the Algarve (South Portugal), Gulf of Cadiz (Spain), Basque waters (Spain) and Cyclades waters (Greece) (EU 98/014; National Coordinator: Associate Professor K I Stergiou, School of Biology, Aristotle University) and defining patterns and propensities in the Greek fishing effort and catches (EU 00/018; National Coordinator: Dr A Machias, Institute of Marine Biology, Crete and Associate Professor K I Stergiou, School of Biology, Aristotle University).

Vasiliki completed her MSc at the department of Zoology, UBC in May 2005. Under the supervision of Dr Daniel Pauly of the Fisheries Centre, her MSc thesis focused on determining potential interactions between fisheries and the world's seabirds, by estimating and mapping the degree of resource overlap on a global scale. At the Fisheries Centre, she also worked under the Sea Around Us Project, and helped compile a global biological database on the world's sea cucumbers. She is also working on creating and populating a database on imports/exports of fish and fish products for the European Union and the US.

She is currently a PhD student at the Fisheries Centre and the Department of Zoology, UBC, where she continues her research work on seabird conservation issues. Her thesis is focusing on creating predictive models on the at-sea distribution of seabirds in order to investigate: (a) how seabirds interact with fisheries in terms of sharing the same resources as well as bycatch; (b) how change in climate may affect the seabirds distribution; and (c) develop criteria for the establishment of global marine Important Bird Areas for the conservation of seabirds.
