Lingbo’s being an “ocean-o-holic” can be traced to her childhood. When she was a little girl, she spent several years in a small fishing village by the sea in China. That was where she developed her first hobby - fishing. The fantastic music from the waves and the fishy smell of the sea always haunt her mind. This wonderful feeling led her to undergraduate study in Marine Fisheries in Ocean University of China. After several years’ research and work in China, she pursued a master study in Fisheries Biology and Fisheries Management in University of Bergen, Norway, where, under supervision by Dr. Arild Folkvord, she completed her thesis titled as “Otolith growth and back-calculation of previous fish size based on individually tagged and marked Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) ”.
Lingbo began a PhD with Dr. Tony Pitcher in UBC Fisheries Centre in January 2008. Her PhD work focuses on ecosystem modeling for the Strait of Georgia using Atlantis and EwE. The Strait of Georgia is under severe stress. She hopes to use her models to answer questions about ecosystem functioning with the emphasis on social-ecological and phisical-ecological impacts and advance ecosystem-based management. Her PhD study is integral to Ecosystem Research Initiative (ERI) of Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and has a potential to link with Puget Sound and California Current models being developed by the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Seattle.
