Katia Freire was born in Aracaju-Sergipe (Northeastern Brazil). In 1986, she went to the Funda��o Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG www.furg.br ) in southeastern Brazil for her undergraduate degree in Oceanography.

In 1995, she concluded her Masters in Biological Oceanography, also in Rio Grande (FURG), working on Feeding Habits of Engraulis anchoita larvae off southern Brazil. Since then, she has been working on fish growth in Brazilian universities: Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte and Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco. During this period, she was also an assistant teacher in Universidade Federal da Para�ba (Northeastern Brazil) in Department of Statistics, where she taught some basic statistics courses for education, geography and management students.

Finally, in January 2000, she decided to come to UBC in order to take her PhD within the Department of Resource Management and Environmental Studies at UBC. Her main interest is to reconstruct both commercial and recreational marine fisheries in Brazil, to model the Northeast Brazilian region using the ECOPATH, and to work on migration patterns of blackfin tuna and their relationship with parasites occurrence and growth. She will be also involved in a special study related to the common names for Brazilian fishes.

Other interests: fish, fish and fish. But you could find her diving in the warm (26-30o C) waters of Fernando de Noronha Island (Brazil) in the past, but not here (it's too cold !!!). She is a PDIC diver, with a speciality in computer and equipments. When she is not working at the Fisheries Centre, she is with her almost three year-old son, teaching him some fish names, helped by her husband (a diver, of course).
