The UBC Fisheries Centre and Canada's Oceans Act and Oceans Strategy
The Oceans Act became law in December 1996, and the new Canada's Ocean Strategy was released by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in July 2002. This paper describes how these documents reflect the issue of ecosystem-based management, which is the main thrust of the FC's research.
This 20-page synopsis is authored by Tony Pitcher, Rashid Sumaila and Eny Buchary. It provides a brief description of Canadian fisheries including: principal target species and fishing ports; catch utilisation; the role of fisheries in the Canadian economy, basic economic information and supply and demand projections; marine, inland, recreational and aquaculture sectors; management strategies and objectives (with examples from Atlantic and Pacific fisheries); fisheries legislation; subsidies; Aboriginal fisheries issues; fisheries research and management institutions (with Internet links) and organisational structure of the managenent agency.
The Fisheries Centre Reports document the establishment and expansion of the Fisheries Centre's research activities as well as present the members and units of the Fisheries Centre.
