Hiroyuki Kurota
Background
PhD. University of Tokyo, Japan
MSc. University of Tokyo, Japan
BSc. University of Tokyo, Japan
Position
Hiro is currently a visiting scientist at the Fisheries Center. Since November 2008, he has been working with Murdoch McAllister (UBC), Tom Johnston and Eric Parkinson (BC government). His main career since 2001 has been a scientific reseacher of the National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries (part of the Fisheries Research Agency, Japan). He also stayed at the Fisheries Centre as a visiting scientist for 12 months in 2006-2007 and at University of Washington for 3 months in 2004. This frequent travel may indicate that his Japanese institute does not need him at all.
He originally studied population dynamics and life-history evolution of a peaceful small beetle infesting wild legumes. After getting a phD for this insect study in 2002, he joined the dangerous fisheries world and has learnt a lot of things about the world, which cannot (and do not need to) be learnt in university.
Research
Hiro is currently working on a project about Bayesian stock assessment modelling of kokanee-rainbow trout interactions in British Columbian lakes. In 2006-2007, he worked on electronic tagging data analysis of Atlantic bluefin tuna using Bayesian methodology with Murdoch McAllister and Barbara Block (Stanford Univ.). The achievement from the project was published in CJFAS in 2009. While in Japan, he is working mainly on stock assessment and management procedure development of southern bluefin tuna (SBT). His researches sometimes contribute to the management of SBT in CCSBT (Commission for the conservation of SBT), but in most cases, they end up as wasted papers.
