PhD Student Position -- UBC Vancouver -- Evaluating the population ecology and fishery options for bull trout in the Nechako River
See the poster for this position
Supervision: Dr. Murdoch McAllister, Quantitative Modeling Group, U.B.C. Fisheries Centre and Mr. Ray Pillipow, B.C. Ministry of Natural Resource Operations.
Location: University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C., Canada
Project tasks: (1) Assess the abundance and population structure of bull trout overwintering in the Nechako River, B.C. The student will help to carry out radio telemetry and mark-recapture experiments, redd counts and carry out the data analyses. (2) Develop a meta-analysis of available spawner and recruitment data for different bull trout populations to improve the estimation of stock-recruit function parameters. (3) Develop population dynamics models of bull trout in the Nechako River. (4) Build a simulation evaluation model of the recreational fisheries for these trout. (5) Evaluate the potential impacts of the current and alternative recreational fishery management options on the status and trends of the bull trout populations.
Stipend and support: $21,000/yr stipend for five years. Fieldwork is fully funded.
Start date: Between September 2011 and January 2012
To apply: Please contact Dr. Murdoch McAllister, Associate Professor, UBC Fisheries Centre, AERL, 2202 Main Mall, Vancouver, B.C. Canada, V6T 1Z4, m.mcallister@fisheries.ubc.ca

PhD Student Position -- SFU Burnaby -- Interdisciplinary Research on Recreational Fishing - Angler Behavior and Spatial Modeling
See the poster for this position
The Human Dimensions and Outdoor Recreation Research Group in the School of Resource and
Environmental Management (REM) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Burnaby, British
Columbia, Canada is looking for a PhD student in the field of the Human Dimensions of
Recreational Fishing.
The position is funded for 3 years and is part of a 5-year multi-university NSERC Collaborative
Research and Development Grant in partnership with the British Columbia Freshwater Fisheries
Society. The university partners are Dr. John Post (U. of Calgary); Dr. Murdoch McAlister
(UBC); Dr. Wolfgang Haider (Simon Fraser University). Dr. Haider leads the HD component in
partnership with Dr. Len Hunt (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Thunder Bay).
The overall research program involves a large scale interdisciplinary active adaptive
management experiment on the stocked and wild rainbow trout fisheries distributed over 6000
lakes in the interior of British Columbia. Manipulations involve stocking density, alternate
reproductive technologies, harvest regulations and access control. This funded PhD student will
develop and test models of angler behavior using field data and web-based angler choice
surveys.
The SFU REM PhD program is a multidisciplinary program integrating aspects of ecology,
policy, and the social sciences. While the ideal starting time for this student in the SFU program
is Sept 1, 2011, starting in January 2012 is possible.
The ideal candidate should have a blend of expertise in:
• human dimensions of recreational fisheries research;
• other relevant social sciences;
• surveying people and analyzing survey data;
• ecological (more specifically biological) sciences;
• statistical modeling; and
• coupled social and ecological systems.
During the PhD research, the candidate is expected to develop and expand their expertise in:
• spatial modeling;
• behavioral modeling specifically on fishing site choice of anglers; and
• coupled social and ecological systems.
Please submit your applications as soon as possible, but no later than June 30, 2011 to Dr.
Wolfgang Haider (whaider@sfu.ca) (778-782-3066).
