As part of our contribution to the Coasts Under Stress project, the Fisheries Centre has been conducting Back to the Future work on Canada's east and west coasts. In July, 2001, members of the Centre's Back to the Future team travelled to Prince Rupert to interview long-time and retired fishers, First Nations elders, and others with specific knowledge of the marine ecosystem of the region. The information shared with the team by interviewees was used to develop and strengthen the team's present and past Ecopath models of the region. In December, 2001, the team returned to Prince Rupert to present the models and seek guidance on rebuilding goals (that is, what ecosystem state is desirable) and, if such rebuilding was achieved, how what sort of fishery would be conducted in the rebuilt ecosystem. (See the brochure for the workshop.)
Work in progress: The beginning of a laborious journey of model simulations begins on the afternoon of day-2 ( Dec. 5, 2001) of the workshop.
Happy Meal: Happily celebrating the end of the workshop with excellent seafood dinner and lots of wine... Aren't we sooo happy..?
