Lake Malawi

Hauling in an nkatcha net, a type of inshore open water seine, off the Nankumba Peninsula, Lake Malawi. Note use of one dug-out canoe and one planked boat, operated jointly by 6 fishermen who share the catch. Increased use of such small-meshed nets in the south of Lake Malawi has drastically reduced the biomass and numbers of large cichlid species in the inshore mid-water fish community. (Photo by TJP)
